MAPA ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST TWO SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS!

Excerpt from Winter Newsletter 2008
By Stephanie Steigerwaldt, Web Editor & Newsletter Co-Editor

After many months of research, discussion, drafting and redrafting, MAPA is very happy to announce its first two scholarship recipients. Sarah Burkeland, an associate degree student in her second year of the Paralegal Program, and Meena Balasubramanian, a student in the Post-baccalaureate Certificate Program will each be awarded $400 for their educational expenses. MAPA received eight application submissions that were carefully evaluated in terms of financial need, grade point average, community outreach and career aspirations.

In appreciation of their scholarships, both Meena and Sarah will serve as MATC Student Liaisons in the coming year. Though not a new role within MAPA, the MATC Student Liaison responsibilities have been further clarified and added to MAPA’s By-Laws as follows: The MATC Student Liaison shall be responsible for facilitating certain communication between MAPA, MATC, and MATC paralegal students. This includes, but is not limited to: updating the Student Committee with news regarding MATC’s paralegal programs and sharing MAPA news, events and benefits with fellow MATC students. This will be accomplished by attending Student Committee meetings, writing an occasional article for MAPA’s newsletter, making announcements in the Student Liaison’s MATC classes and posting flyers in high-trafficked areas at MATC. This appointee shall assist with coordinating MAPA’s Annual Student Reception at MATC. This appointee shall serve as a direct venue to express student concerns and suggestions about MATC’s programs with MATC’s Paralegal Advisory Board.”

MAPA TO LAUNCH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
By Regina Reynolds, Student Committee Chair

It has long been a goal of our organization to provide scholarships to worthy paralegal students. With much hard work from MAPA’s Student committee, Regina Reynolds, Susan Sweet, Stephanie Steigerwaldt, Jennifer Lammers and Julie Barnhart, this plan is in the process of being implemented and two scholarships will be awarded in 2008.

MAPA will award two scholarships of $400 each to two qualified students enrolled in Madison Area Technical College’s Associate Degree or Post-baccalaureate Paralegal Programs. Scholarship applicants must be enrolled in either their second semester of the Associate Degree program or the first semester of the Post-baccalaureate program: In addition, the recipients will be required to serve a one year term as the MATC Student Liaison.

The deadline to apply is October 26, 2007, and winners will be notified mid-January, 2008. Please contact Gina Reynolds at student_chair@madisonparalegal.org for more information.
